Vyayam, the most ancient martial tradition of India

part 2ª
Basic Principles

Vyayam practice should be accompanied by five rules:

1. The movement of the body should follow the breath.
2. The mind observes the respiration and the movement of the body.
3. The respiration is audible and expansive.
4. All movements are circular, harmonic and expansive.
5. The end of one movement is the beginning of the next movement.

There are three types of Vyayam

1. Subtle Vyayam (in Sanskrit the term is Sukshma Vyayam), an energizing, external energetic movement.
2. Dense Vyayam (Sthula Vyayam), a static and internal energetic movement.
3. Mental or Essential Vyayam (Karana Vyayam) is a magic and psychic energetic movement.

Three ways of Practicing Vyayam

1. Dynamic Meditation
2. Energetic Gymnastics
3. Martial Arts

Depending on the dynamic we follow are how the movements will be. They will give us strength according to the energy we generate and the type of practice we do. The structures (Kramas) are divided into chains of positions called Vyangas or links. Each position and exercise is called Shakti-Vikashaka, meaning “Essential energy Strengthener.”

The two essential series

1. The set of Ten Exercise Series for Strengthening the Energy in the Body. This series is essential in order to be initiated in the Vyayam practice.

2. The Chess Board Series. This series is directed towards those who have already been initiated into the practice.
Another simple form of practice is “Happy Vyayam”, also called “Sukha Vyayam” in Sanskrit. It is a special Vyayam for older and younger people and for those who are just beginning to practice. It is made up of stretching, coordination and ventilation exercises. It is called “Happy” because it gives large doses of happiness and joy and because it also permits the person to recover their health through the strengthening of tendons and the flexibility of the articulations and spinal column.. This Vyayam is also indicated for all types of people in any kind of circumstances, they can be disabled, senior citizens or even children.
