The meaning of the term Vyayam
The word Vyayam comes from Sanskrit and means “to tame the inner breath.” Currently, in some places, it is practised under Dravidian names (not Sanskrit ones) like: Maipayat, energetic and harmonic aerobic exercises and kalaripayat, “gymnastics of the mastery of movement.” Vyayam and Kalaripayat are the same and are ancestral Sanskrit or Dravidian names.

Benefits of Vyayam practise
Vyayam gives harmony to the body and mind, strength to the muscles and tendons; it liberates the spinal column and gives the necessary elasticity to the whole back. It eliminates pain and muscular tension and unblocks joints preventing diseases like degenerative osteoarthritis and arthritis and has a special effect on the bones helping to maintain them strong and healthy as our whole skeleton is nourished and regenerated this way. It strengthens and gives vigour to the internal organs and directs energy through our body regenerating the tissues and cells. The body becomes compact and strong; it increases our vital capacity, balances our mind and gives us health, vigour and wellbeing. We could say that Vyayam regenerates the whole organism due to the specific work we do on breathing.
An assiduous Vyayam practitioner is someone with great vital capacity, a balanced mind and strong body. The body becomes
strong and compact, it increases our vital capacity, balances our mind and gives us health, vigour and wellbeing.
Some one who practices Vyayam assiduously will notice that their movements, positions, gestures and ways of speaking will change and they will be full of contentment, expression and energy.
